"We will simply take our rooms now, thank you," Beaulin said. It was true, the Children would cause trouble if they were seen. But they were not, and there was no reason for them to be seen. She paid and went upstairs herself, expecting the other two to follow her.

Tavis lay in his bed staring up. In his haste to get away, he'd forgotten to flirt with a few of the maids. It didn't matter, he wanted nothing to do with White Tower plots and he did not desire to be on an Aes Sedai string. He knew they'd be up here somewhere, of course. But if he left early enough, he might not even have to see them again.

"You didn't answer the question," Timot said. "How many teenage lads do you see in here and how well do you honestly think you blend in? I'm not asking your excuse to drink or what not."

"What an end to the day," Imika grumbled. "Long, tedious roads and end with the Children of the Light."

"Many thinks do, Imika," Beaulin noted. "We are fortunate that the Light as given us such aid in our mission as to lead us here. We can resupply readily, and set out on our quest again."

Tavis could not sleep. It was more than uncomfortable. It was more than Aes Sedai, and Warders, and Children of the Light. He had a genuinely bad feeling about this inn and this night. He shifted and cursed himself. What had been so off in the common room that he was so uncomfortable. What hadn't he noticed? What was missing... or what... what wasn't missing?

He sat up in a jerky motion and strode down into the common room again, looking bleary eyed and somewhat disheveled. He recounted every face he recognized, twice over. What was wrong?

"Where precisely are we going from here?" Imika asked.

Elizbet just shook her head.

"Nevermind."

He he did not get her point and he did not know who she was. she would not bother to explain either to him.

"I do not have to ask your bussiness. You're another mercenary headed for the Aiel War, correct?"

The gleeman counted and recounted faces in the common room, each time getting the same total. Something was missing, something was off, something did not quite sit well with a man who had spent most of his life making it his business to see what is out of place. He slicked his long, silver hair back and sniffed.

Then he looked at a face and didn't count it, wait, what? Why not?

He tried to find that face again, and it took nearly three minutes to find it. It was so... plain. Boring. His eyes had just slid over the person each time he'd looked at them. That was uncharacteristic of him. He leaned forward and forced himself to keep an eye on this mystery person. Why would anyone, how could anyone, be so plain?

Timot strolled back to the common room after a decent night's rest, and observed the gleeman playing. He seemed rather distracted by something, Timot noted. He wondered exactly what it was.

Elizbet was already sitting at her usual corner table when Timot came down from his room. Even this early in the morning, most of the tables were full. She sighed, no doubt he'd ask her more questions about her reasons for dressing as a lad.

He was playing the pipe this morning. He'd very little rest, the odd, overly-meaningless person seemed to be waiting for some sign. At least he thought they did. They didn't move, he wasn't even able to fully determine gender at this distance, and he was getting anxious about them.

Then one of the Aes Sedai came down, the one wearing a blue dress. She went to speak to the innkeeper, he supposed to either drill for information or to pay. He ignored her, until the person suddenly moved. Toward the Aes Sedai. With a knife drawn. Nobody noticed the person walk casually toward the woman, nobody noticed the knife raised.

Everybody noticed him kill the assassin though. Aes Sedai or no, he didn't like people who were somehow wrong being allowed to murder. Stories of Grey Men wandered his thoughts as he killed.

Timot immediately surged to his feet. "Well, gleeman," he said. "It appears you're gifted with more talents than simply entertainment."

Elizbet had not even been looking in that direction when the assassin attempted to murder the Aes Sedai. Tavis caught her attention when he struck the man down. She was silent as Timot, congratulated him.

Tavis furrowed his brow and did not take a bow. Assorted congratulations came, but nobody looked at him the same. The Aes Sedai looked... bemused. She was studying him right now, not at all bothered that she was almost killed.

"Grey Man," he muttered in her direction, and then began to walk off. He did not look back, not at the Aes Sedai, not at anyone, and wanted to get as far away from everything as he could.

Timot was intrigued. The man was more than a simple Gleeman, that much was obvious.

Elizbet was also intruiged, but she did not congratulate the gleeman. He was trying to get away from everyone, that much was obvious. She could Aes Sedai looking bemused, not at all bothered by the murder attempt.

The gleeman grabbed his bundle and slung his color-patched cloak around his shoulders, and left the inn.

The Aes Sedai went upstairs, however.

"Imika," she said levelly. "Gray Men."
