Zedd let it burn. The end result would be painful, but not fatal, and she would be bald.

Hair length was a symbol of a woman's status in the Midlands, a bald woman would be a woman without status. He decided it fit her, as that was exactly what she was. He didn't show any expression at her panic, any attempt to put the fire out would be met with failure, it was fire born of magic. It would burn until all her hair was gone.

When the last of the flames finally died down, her head was red, as if the whole of her scalp had a sunburn.

"I hope you understand, now, Kara, that you are not with the D'Harans anymore. You are my prisoner-of-war, and I will not tolerate your snide attitude any longer."

Lexino was immensely confused by the display of fire but he hadn't moved yet. He was still holding his bow and staring at her. He felt sorry for her, but he wasn't going against the wizard. It was plain he was in charge anyway. Plus anyone who could set someones hair on fire like that plainly had some sort of power.

"Come along, now," Zedd said to both of them. He looked over at the young man.

"What might be your name, lad?" he asked casually, prodding Kara to move forward now with the threat of an arrow or fire.

"Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander," he said with a flourish and a bow. "Wizard of the First Order. And this... thing calls herself Kara. She is a Mord-Sith in the service of Panis Rahl, a butcher of a man who would have us all be his slaves," his lips turned in a bitter half snarl.

"Nevertheless, I will take this one to Confessor justice."

Zedd raised an eyebrow at him. "Well, ignorance is no way to live, so I suppose I ought to tell you the story..."

He spoke as they walked, going to lengths to explain that for many years now, the lands of D'Hara have been brutalized and conquered by this Panis Rahl, a man with powerful magic and a legion of strong followers. After Rahl managed to conquer all of D'Hara, he turned his eyes to the Midlands, which Lexino and himself lived. For some time now, they have been fighting a war to keep Rahl from doing here what he did there. Thousands were dying because of him, and he did not seem to wish to end the slaughter.

"Mord-Sith," he added, looking at Kara's burnt head, "Are assassin's of his, designed as weapons against Wizards and Sorceresses. You would do well not to fight one yourself, what is the worst pain you've known?" Zedd looked at him from the corner of his eye.

"I was mauled by a bear once," Lexino said, remembering. "I was fourteen." That was when the hermit was still alive and had cared for him and nursed him back to health. And scolded him for carelessness after that. He'd been sore for weeks afterward, and had nearly died.

He looked the young man dead in the eyes, seriousness beyond any doubt, "The Mord-Sith carry these things," he pointed to the leather rod on his belt, "Agiel. Do NOT touch one, and do everything you can to avoid being touched by one. If you remember the pain of the mauling, rest in full assurance, a touch from one of these is a hundredfold worse."

Though the fire had given her quite the scare, the pain was nothing compared to the training of the mord-sith. She glared at him as she walked along, occasionally encouraged by the poke of an arrow or the threat of fire. She was silent as she listened to their stories,but she bit her tongue to keep from making retorts as she thought of ways to get out of here. She knew that the touch of a confessor would be her end.

Zedd announced loudly, suddenly, "We are stopping here for the night! Lexino, bind her hands and her legs together. Do not worry about discomforting her, and don't be afraid to lay her on her burns. They aren't anything, I assure you."

He walked up to Kara, "And just for safekeeping, I'm putting a Light Web around you. You go so much as ten feet from this spot, and all your skin will ignite and only I will be able to put the flames out. I might do that, not out of mercy either. If you value your skin," he added emphasis to the word 'skin', "Do not be anymore a fool than you have too. You truly ought to listen to something other than that absurd devotion to Panis Rahl. 'Lord Rahl guide us, Lord Rahl protect us...'" he mocked.

Lexino did as Zedd asked, though he made sure the ropes were secure, he also made sure they weren't cruelly tight.

"I'm supposed to kill the wizard," she growled.

She would not stray beyond the ten feet,but she wouldn't sit still either, she could shuffle and hop in these loose bindings if she wanted to. For now she sat where Lex had placed her.

Zedd spelled the ropes, simply because he expected the boy to be kind.

He went a good four yards from her to start the fire. Then he pulled out some dried meat and fruit, and began to eat. He watched the two cautiously, though. Kara was simply more trouble than he was thinking she was worth. He might have to kill her before they got to the next town if she kept this up.
