The First Wizard Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander, the so-called "Wind of Death" looked anything but at the moment. He was thinking, deeply. His wife and his daughter had been sent away. He couldn't leave them in Aydindril, not with the war going on as it was, it would whither his two flowers to the point of death. So instead, the wife of a powerful Wizard and his daughter went off to pretend to be commoners in a city far from the D'haran border. And to help with his thinking of them, he used his Wizard's Rock. He sat on the stone, stark naked, eyes closed, letting the sensations of the Rock help direct his thoughts.

It was more pleasant and more effective than regular thinking. His long, dark hair went down his shoulders and his twitched a little to shift his seating on the rock. There were odd forces at work. Something about the magic of Panis Rahl made him uncomfortable. He would find something to do with it.

There was also the matter of the Mother Confessor and the Midland's council. The fools actually seized the Sword of Truth. Only a Wizard of the First Order had the authority and the wisdom to name a true Seeker, anyone they named would succumb to the Sword's magic. He grumbled, contemplating letting them do it and living with their actions.

The world around his physical body, however, was ignored. His robes were in a heap by the Rock, and other than that, he was aware of nothing.

Kara crept silently through the grass from behind the old man. She already knew who he was and knew Lord Rahl would be ecstatic if she could capture him. The idiot was sitting naked on a rock and seemed to be lost in thought. She came up behind him and struck him hard across the back with her Agiel.

The Wizard's eyes sprung open at the pain. Terrible pain. Pain as bad as anything he ever experienced. He sprung up, not unconscious, like most would have been, and very displeased. Almost as one fluid motion of jumping up, opening his eyes, and turning around, he saw the brown leather and the Agiel. A Mord-Sith. Panis Rahl was sending out his assassins again.

"That's rather impolite, you know," he said in an annoyed voice. "You can kill someone, sneaking up on them like that."

She simply smirked at his comment.

"That would be the point, wouldn't it, wizard?"

She watched him waiting for the chance to strike him again before he could use his precious magic.

"Now, where is the honor in this?" he said, circling back from her a bit. "Attacking an old man, naked, alone in the woods while he thinks. Hardly befitting a warrior of any skill what so ever," his eyes narrowed slightly. She was young, she couldn't have been Mord-Sith for long. He was not entirely sure how they were trained, only that he wanted nothing to do with it.

If she knew who he was, what did she think she was doing? Maybe Panis didn't explain the Wizard tests to his Mord-Sith. It was possible. She was a long distance from the People's Palace, a long way from D'Hara. She must have been traveling a fortnight, and must have known where he was. Unless this was a chance encounter.

His mind crunched possibilities and probabilities while he looked for a solution to his problem. Her.

Kara ignored his comments and darted forward and, lashing out with her Agiel. If she needed more reach she could always hold it by the long chain, but by now she held it firmly in her hand, immune to the pain.

Zedd darted back away from the Agiel, familiar with the pain, but not eager to reunite with it. He thrust out a hand and a blast of Wizard's Fire struck the ground in front of her with a thudding impact and explosion.

"Stand back or I'll do that to you!" he said. He wasn't sure if he was serious or not. Maybe she would back down. But...

He couldn't let her go. Maybe if her guard went down he could throw a Wizard's Web over her. That would work. It'd also annoy her beyond belief, but he could deal with that.

Kara was no intimidated. She didn't even hesitate as she darted forward then slipped sideways, lashing out with the Agiel, holding it by the long chain this time. She needed to finish this quickly.

Her lunge caused Zedd to respond instinctively. He knew how the powers of a Mord-Sith worked, but if you can't get around something, you can't get around it.

His hands flashed with a green light and a paralysis web laid itself around the Mord-Sith. Even before the spell had reached her, less than a moment's time, he felt her seize his magic and inflict the pain upon him for trying to use it against her.

Panis really didn't tell her about the Wizard's Tests, or she was really arrogant.

With a mind disciplined by what made him a First Wizard, he continued to use his magic against her. In less time than it took for him to realize what had happened, he pushed himself past he pain and cast the spell in full. He could feel her rage at what he had done, how his magic flared and burned in him like a blister that had been ruptured, but it was he who had the upper hand now. She had no way out of his Wizard's Web until he said so.

"You know," he said despite the pain, and with a smile on his face, "Wizard's First Rule."

People are stupid.

Kara just became more and more enraged, but her power fed of rage and hate, the angrier her made her the more pain she put him in through his use of magic. Now she was concentrating all that hate and rage into the magic he was using to try and break the spell. The sooner she could move the batter, until then she simply glared at him.

Zedd sighed.

"Your powers only work to hurt me, to make me want to stop using the magic, I know how this works," he pulled his robe back over his head and shrunk his Wizard's Rock back down to pocket size, with magic that was causing him pain to use.

"Clearly, you are either more stupid than I thought, or your master didn't tell you that I'm a Wizard of the First Order, or maybe you just are a lummox with as much brains as an ox," he smiled at her again.

He put a hand on her neck, "The Agiels, your powers, are derived from magic. The same type of magic I use. If that little leather stick can do it, I certainly can." From his fingertips, unexpected pain almost identical to the type inflicted by the Agiel, like the kind she was channeling through his magic into him now, exploded into her neck. She got only the faintest hint of it, enough to tell her that he could do it, then he withdrew his hand. "Now, unlike you, I am not some barbarian going to torture you while we travel. You can come civilly, or I can take you as a prisoner. It is all the same to me."

Kara did not even wince at the pain that lanced through her back. She was one who had killed her trainer and taken their Agiel, the small pain he sent through her was nothing. She continued glaring at him.

"As if I'd cooperate with the likes of you," she snarled.

"Oh very well, I suppose I could figure some way to have you carried to Aydindril. But first, we're taking this away," he raised a hand and the Agiel was tugged out of her grip. He took it by the chain and held it distastefully away from himself and hooked it to his belt.

He wondered why he bothered to capture her. She was now slowing him down. He could have, and possibly should have, just reduced her to ashes with Wizard's Fire. He would be without this annoying pain, and he wouldn't have to take her around. Maybe someone would turn up that could guard her by more conventional means than magic, or maybe a Confessor.

He also supposed it would be economic to destroy the Agiel, but he didn't do it. He yawned as he partitioned off the part of his mind that felt the pain of her power in his magic. It would be easier to ignore there.

"Eventually you're going to sleep," he said to her. "And that's when I'm going to move you. Until someone who can move you without the hassle arrives, you're traveling via dragging."

Kara growled.

If the wizard let his guard down ever for a second she would pounce on him, for now she was stuck. It would take several days, even continuously burning him for his use of magic for her to be force to give into sleep. For that she had her training to thank.

Zedd tied off the spell. The Web would hold now, even if he didn't concentrate on it. He smiled to himself at the work. It was a very nice Wizard's Web, one of his best.

"Well, you can simmer and stew all you want. I'm taking an afternoon nap!" he set his head down on the tree and stared at her. Or maybe he was sleeping. She wouldn't know the difference, Wizard's slept with their eyes open. This time, however, he set a few spells around his nap-site. Another unexpected guest would trigger an alarm that would wake him.
