Richard didn't look up from the stew, which he ate slowly and tentatively. "You wouldn't believe it if I told you..."

There was a flash and a shimmer and her laughter faded with her, but there was an unmistakably mystic aura around Sylaost now.

The next day the new black powder arrived. Explosions sounded ringingly. The mountain itself shook and crumbled, and their pit deepened and widened drastically. It was now oversaw by a man in a black coat with a sour disposition. Suddenly the aggressions of the woodland creatures abated, and workers worked with unholy speed.

Slyaost did everything he had done before to slow the destruction down - but everything didn't work as well. It was strange - almost as if there was some other power at work opposing his. But he was stronger now. After accepting the offer of the fairy, he felt new strength pour into him and proceeded to wreck campsite after campsite, ruining the powder and again working to sabotage the efforts of the workers.

He caused the camp to rot - he also discovered that he had new powers as well, thanks to the gift from the fairy: to create diseases and pestilances. He used it to his fullest, causing the workers to fall ill constantly. He spoiled the powder. He called down rains from the skies and filled in the pit, turning it into a lake. Whatever they did, he worked swiftly to reverse it or else transform into something for nature. The woods grew swiftly, thicker and deeper than ever.

The animals, strangely, refused to attack regardless of what he did to persuade them. But the full force of the woods - and, indeed, all of nature was his to command.

Lisa ate leftover stew for breakfast. The innkeeper had put Richard up in a room and offered him breakfast today. He hadn't come down yet, but she supposed he would soon. It was time for any man to be waking up. She decided to go check on him, at Beth's urging and climbed the stairs to him room with a bowl of stew for him. she knocked and waited for his answer.

Richard drug himself out of bed in naught but his smallclothes and accepted the stew silently and ate. His sleep had been worried and fitful. The sword was still there, too. So it was real. The people were kind though. He wondered where he was.

The black-coated man located Sylaost without much difficulty. "There you are, you troublesome gnat," he scoffed. "Look at you, probably taught by a half-dead fool to wield measly powers in nature. Die!"

The rain Sylaost had brought became a storm, winds killed trees and lightning split and burned, all with the intent on killing him. Yet none of it availed him. Instead a shimmering aura surrounded him and the Faerie appeared before them.

"You... you made a deal with one of the Fae?! You fool!" the man turned to run but his feet suddenly were sucked into the mud. His howls of fear and agony were soon replaced with the gargling sounds of mud.

Sylaost turned to the Faerie and bowed. "Thank you, my lady," he said. "Yet I fear he is not the only one. We have stopped the advancement for now yet they will be back and the battle will continue, indeed it will be never-ending..."

"How are you feeling?" She asked.

She was concerned for him.

The Faerie smiled darkly, "Oh, it will end when they find their stone and iron cities overgrown..."

He looked at her lazily, "Better," he ate a bit. "You serve anything other than stew here?" He looked over the young woman casually. She was pretty thing, if a little mucky. But, then again, he was sure he was walking in a second skin of dirt, grime, soot, and foliage. He sighed.

Maybe it was time to tell someone some of his stories. At least, the ones that haunted him.

Lisa laughed.

"We're using up the leftovers. Just wait till supper, we're having a roast tonight."

She paused, why was she so concerned about this stranger. It was one thing to be polite and offer ones hospitality, but this? She reassured herself that she just wanted to know what had happened the other day. She noticed the sword and walked over to it.

"That's a fine blade you've got there," she commented.

He took a closer look at the sword, "It's old. Real old. Got it from..." he hesitated a moment, perhaps a bit too long, "An old man. The blade's not even steel, it's iron. Not really very good, although I guess it's in good condition."

"So, uh," he lacked a name for her, "What do you all do around here? And where am I in relation to that big government project in the woods?"

Lisa paused.

"That government project no longer exists. Something to do with some wizard in the woods. People are scared to go and check even, with the stories of animals attacking."

She did not mention that she had seen this, either.

"As for what we do around here, we generally just go about our lives. Though that hasn't been easy of late. We all have different skills, the blacksmith, the cobbler, etc. Many others are soldiers."

She was not sure how much to tell him.

"You work for fun, eh?" he smiled a little. "I guess I can identify with that, although I chose to make my job finding fun professionally. You normally talk to men in their undergarments in the mornings?" he asked.

He also leaned and looked out the window. The forest seemed a tad... thicker. He was actually really happy to be out of there now. Although what his next move was... probably go south. Go far far away, lose the sword, and get away from all this war and magic nonsense.

Lisa blushed, slightly embarrassed.

"I usually know their names," she said, teasing.

"Richard," he said. "Your father isn't going to run in here with a rifle or anything and demand that I marry you, is he?"

He slipped some clothes on and finished eating. "So what does a pretty thing like you do here anyway? You don't look the smithing or cobbling type to me."

Lisa chuckled, "No, he won't."

She sighed and looked out the window, thinking then she had an idea. The forest wouldn't be a good idea, but there were other places to enjoy the beauty and do some routine scouting at the same time.

"Do you ride?" She asked.

For the people of the colony it would be like asking if someone could breathe, but with trains becoming popular, she was not sure whether someone from a city might ride or not.

"I can," he stated. Unusual, or maybe not. He was many, many miles from any of the large and ancient cities of the world, and most of the changes seen there did not yet reach here.

"Why?" The untamed wild of this land held things, though, things that he was wary of. That mysterious old man, the strange magic, the things the Dragon had shown him...
