"Richard...you look like you've just seen a ghost," she commented, concern in her voice.

"You know those stories they tell children, things mentioned in history books," he said, drawing the blinds shut.

"Dragons, I've seen one. Talked to it, too. Told me some things I didn't want to know. Showed me things. I asked it to go away, and it did. Told my employer at the time I killed it, got paid, tried to forget. Seen things. The Wizard's War, the one all the history books mention from a thousand years ago, it was worse than they say. The Dragon was there, lived in it, fought in it. It told me those times were coming back, that it felt it in the bones of the world. Those things that happened at the dig site, that wasn't natural. It had a mind behind it, someone, or something, is doing things..." he looked at the sword again, but decided not to say anything.

"If all that's real, why can't that be true? The revolution is on the doorstep of something else, and I don't want to be here when it goes boom. I don't want to deal with anything I can't shoot, girlie," he sighed and leaned his head on the wall.

"I...I don't know what to say."Lisa said softly, as she placed a hand on his shoulder. She didn't know how to react, but she felt compelled to comfort him.

He shivered when she touched him, fingers twitching. It had been a long time since he'd actually experienced human contact. There weren't a lot of friendly mercenaries out there, and nearly no women. He relaxed and murmured, "I just have a really bad feeling about something."

The explosion outside shook the building, and as the mountain slid down, ruined, the weather took an abrupt change for the worse.

"I do too..." She replied, removing her hand.

The reaction to her touch had not escaped her. Just then an explosion shook the building. The quake startled her and she grabbed the wall for support.

"Oh joy of joys," he grabbed his guns and strapped all six of them to his belt. "Not good, not good, not good," he exited the room and went down the stairs.

"Nobody panic, remain indoors and do not kiss that goat!" he walked out and saw... well a mess. The woods trembled and quaked themselves, growing thicker by the second. It was a surreal scene, and quite worrying.

A roving band of animals then ran out, and attacked.

Birds and beasts of every description, he killed the first six he saw with rapidly fired shots. But more came on. Animals did not behave like this.

Lisa bolted down the stairs through the side door between the house and the inn and into her room. She grabbed her small pack and her rifle and sprinted outside to see what was going on.

The animals kept coming. She saw one approaching Richard and immediately leveled her rifle and fired, taking it down. She hurried up to him.

"Are you all right?" she asked, doing her best to reload quickly, not an easy feat with a rifled barrel. She was quick as could, be but it still took time, no matter how good you were. The bayonet, did not make it any easier, though would help if the animals overwhelmed them.

He was quick to reload pistols, but precious seconds were precious. He threw a knife at the next bird and pulled the girl back inside, slamming the door behind him.

"No worries, all. Just a swarm of killer bunnies."

"Just killer bunnies?" Lisa asked.

This man had a a very weird sense of humor. She sighed and shook her head.

"Bolt the doors, barricade them if you have to. I'm going up stairs to see if I can get a good angle though the window."

"Shoot the ringleaders!" he called after her. How would one stop mass attacking wild animals...

"Fire!"

There didn't seem to be any leaders among the animals. She sighed and began shooting those who seemed to be causing the most trouble. She took a shot at a bear and and closed the shutters again as she ducked to reload.

Richard took to handing out burning brands, "Animals hate fire!" he ran up the stairs with some lit sticks. "Toss these out, mind you don't burn us down!"

He threw one at a bird, which burned rather well, actually, despite how wet everything was. It was morbid.

The animals began retreating after a point, as only so many of them would abide having fire thrown at them.

"Same to you."

She said as she helped. she then, grabbed her rifle and took a shot at a few that weren't retreating, to give them a little encouragement.

Syalost watched in horror as the animals were slaughtered. "No!" he cried. "No!" he had been working carefully, trying to make sure he could as many animals alive as he possibly could - now, there was a wholesale slaughter on them. He hadn't even sent them out to attack - he had been mostly focused with the weather and the earth.

He looked at the two that had done the most killing, a man and a woman and a deep hatred burst up. He lifted one hand, summoning thick vines to spring up from the ground, gripping their wrists and ankles and again around their waists. Thorny vines at that. Let them deal with that, if they could.

There was a blinding flash and a crack, Sylaost's staff shattered into millions of burnt pieces and littered the ground. The vines receded, the woods returned to the state they were before they were overgrown, burnt and cut back.

The man in the tattered robes appeared again, his face impassive. "One ought to be more careful when working nature into his spells. Do you not realize the climatic problems you cause when you alter weather so, or how traumatic it is to a plant's internal cycles to be grown so swiftly? You do more damage than you stopped, young Sylaost, if you'd think about consequences."
