Avina carefully picked two arrows from her quiver and took a deep breath. She was going to do good at this. She'd practiced. She'd do great. |

Caranthir waited, not particularly concerned. He shifted his feelings into neutral - studying the wreath. It became his entire world. Everything else disappeared into insignificance. _________________ A path taken is paths forsaken.

(Archery contests like this consist of rounds. At the beginning of the round, archers may make an Awareness roll. A success grants an extra success die, a great success grants two, an extraordinary success grants three. You are able to spend these die all at once, or dive them among both arrows. So let's roll that awareness!) _________________ Delicious tea, or deadly poison?

Avina's first shot missed the wreath, but hit the board. She could retrieve it for the next round. Her second shot went right through the wreath.
She smiled. Not bad. She would do better next round, she was determined to.

Many archers lost both their arrows at the first around. The chief contestants though, and the main attractions, stayed in. The Bowmen of the Guild took an early lead, scoring 2 points over the Royal Archers of Dale, who scored none, but kept their arrows. _________________ Delicious tea, or deadly poison?

Caranthir took careful aim and fired at the wreath, but an unlucky breath of wind carried his arrow into the lake. He scowled. _________________ A path taken is paths forsaken.

Avina set up for the second round. She scowled as both her arrows narrowly missed their mark. She took a deep breath. She needed to stay focused if she was going to stay in the competition. She retrieved both her arrows and checked them to see if they would still fly straight.

Caranthir pulled his bow and fired. This one smacked into the board, not the wreath giving him no points. _________________ A path taken is paths forsaken.

There was a tremendous ado about the conclusion of the Wreath Shoot, and much shouting and cheering was made amongst the crowd. The Bowmen of the Guild was hailed as winner of this first part, and the people of Esgaroth proudly declared for the Bowman, Bard. The visitors from Dale continued to cry out "For the King!" to their Archer, who had a poor showing for this.
The Wreath and board were taken down, and a wooden wand was set on a post to be shot at for the Wand Shoot. The announcer spoke again, "You may select two arrows once again for this event! If you fail to hit the wand on your first round, you may not compete in the second!" _________________ Delicious tea, or deadly poison?

Avina carefully lined up her shots, for the wand shoot. Her first shot was a narrow miss, but her second was right on the mark. She grinned, she was still in the tournament.

Avina sighed as her first arrow missed, but her grin happily returned at the second hit its mark. She was getting good at this. She retrieved her arrows, carefully checking them again for anything that would change their trajectory.

The Dale crowd cheered loudly, as the Royal Archer of Dale, in his black livery managed to secure 4 points to make up for his poor showing at the Wreath Shot. The Bowman of the Guild, however, failed to hit at all, with Esgaroth's people calling loudly and angrily at him for this embarrassment.
And so, the previous year's highest ranked Guildsman would face off against the two highest scoring archers of this year's competition, this Royal Archer of Dale and the newcomer, the Beorning girl, in the Ring Shoot.

Caranthir aimed his final arrow at the wand, only to completely miss again, disqualifying him from the tournament. He shook his head and backed off silently.
As he had thought, this entire competition was an utter waste of time and, on top of it, his fears were correct. He had disgraced himself. He had performed abysmally. He melted into the crowd, figuring that he might as well stick around to see how Avina performed. _________________ A path taken is paths forsaken.
