"And I as well, not much else to say."

She continued walking, not paying too much attention.

"Why did you sign in for this war, young man?" the older person asked. It might help if he knew what this mercenary was thinking.

Again, the girl was very random. She was even more likely to get herself killed than he was. The Aiel were indiscriminate, efficient, and ferocious. And thoroughly unimpressed with the military might of Cairhien thus far. They were pressing toward the capital with near no challenge at all.

Why was he going back?!

"I follow the money," Timot replied. "Carhein was offering good money for people to join their war. Hence, I signed up and I go there now."

"So if I offered more money right now for you to fall onto your sword, would you do it?" the gleeman countered.

He probably couldn't outpay Laman, but for one man he might be able to match what Laman would pay thousands.

The Great Alliance had every merc from here to the ocean signing in. Armies from Andor, Illian, Tear, the Whitecloaks, and the Borderland nations were all marching to aid Cairhien. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers against an army approximated at eighty-thousand Aiel.

Tavis did not favor their own odds.

"Don't waste your breath arguing with me," Timot said flatly. "It's not going to work. I'm already resolved to go to the war, live or die."

"It was a genuine question," the gleeman replied sharply. "If I can match or better what you're being paid, will you impale yourself with your own sword?"

Timot merely ignored the gleeman and kept walking.

Elizbet sighed," Why do I have the feeling the gleeman is right?"

"I suppose jumping onto a spearpoint would be more accurate, given your current decision, but nevertheless, you could answer me, fool boy," he spat at the side of the road.

"Girl, what are you doing here? You can't fight in a battle. For that matter, neither can I!"

"Why should I answer you?" Timot said, finally breaking his silence. "I didn't invite you to come with me. You invited yourself. I barely know you at all, as a matter of fact. I fill to see how I choose to live - or to die - is your concern."

Elizbet shrugged at the first comment, but raised an eyebrow after the second.

"Make no mistake, gleeman I can take care of myself."

Tavis roared with laughter at the girl's comment, and some too at the younger man's declaration that he might live.

"I spent less than a day in the furthest reaches of the Waste, before I was found half dead from the heat and turned back over the mountains. This was back when the Aiel didn't kill EVERYONE on sight. If I recall correctly...

'The Three-fold Land is hard, wetlander, soft things die here.' Yes, that is what they told me. I suppose if you have a death wish, fighting the Aiel would be the way to do it," he said.

Then he looked back at the girl, "A eight year old among the Aiel could kill you before you could blink, and likely me as well," he stated in the most matter-of-fact voice he'd ever used. He wasn't being demeaning, or trying to goad her. It was truth. A simple, honest truth.

"And yet you are heading straight towards the Aiel with us," Timot said mildly, cutting through the Gleeman's laughter.

Elizbet just sighed and shook her head. She knew from listening to the other two this whole time that it was not worth it to argue.

"At the very least, I am old," the gleeman gave him a wry smile.
