He surveyed the small village with disinterested eyes, while in fact observing every detail. He looked like the average traveler, nothing to attract attention, but he'd followed the sweep of sickness and death to this place. Whatever or whoever was spreading it was somewhere here.

Arik wrapped his cloak around himself more tightly. He didn't like the feeling he was getting from this place. Something bad was here, that was a good sign, for him. He would find the origin of this magic, and figure out how to get it stopped.

His sweeping gaze caught a Wizard, by the blue and silver stripe around his neck one of the Crystal Order. Maybe he was the origin of this plague? Wizards were as susceptible as anyone else to an arrow to the back, or a sword through the neck. But this one didn't look.... evil. He looked fairly silly, actually. Like someone who belonged in a library rather than a road.

Raiab surveyed the village and frowned. Another dismal, secluded, far out of the way town. Yet supposedly the great Trian had come through the area years before - maybe even had settled down here. He sighed, there was no way of knowing, really. Trian was notoriously reclusive and the histories were generally vague about where he had lived. All he had to go on were a few vague references, lots and lots of hearsay and old legends that were probably more than half false.

But a clue was a clue. It led him here and so he was going to investigate. He walked into the town, wishing it wasn't so hot as he went.

Zavi was going back and forth between working the shopfront and the workshop. The younger of the two sons was making a delivery to a nearby village and the eldest had come down with the plague. His wife was currently tending to him. Ziva wiped her brow and went back to the sword she was forging. The village had been hit pretty hard by the plague, it was causing people to go insane. She had a feeling it was the work of magic and she hated magic, made her skin crawl just thinking about the origins of the plague.

Arik strode up to the Wizard and tapped him on the shoulder lightly, "Excuse me, could I borrow your magical expertise for some time?" he asked casually.

"You probably have hard of the plague that has been sweeping through this land recently. I have reason to believe it is magical in nature, and I have been following its trail. It ends in this village. Since Wizards are the forefront of all things magical, I thought that you might be able to see things i could not," he absently fingered a dagger on his belt. He saw a man who had an ill-favored look skulking about. Another suspect. One that would not draw as much memory as a Wizard passing through.

"Also, perhaps I could procure you a form of payment," he wanted the help. "A horse for a traveler, no doubt you are tired from walking so much. I can pay for you to get one and have it shoe'd in little time at all."

Raiab blinked, and bowed rather formerly to the man.

"I would be pleased to assist," he said. It wasn't too much of a detour from his main objective, after all. And a horse would be very welcome. "Lead the way."

Ziva hung the sword on a rack and sighed, wiping her brow again. Of course she was sweating, the workshop was sweltering hot with that fire going in the already hot summer's day. She was starting to get a headache.

Your fine, you're just working yourself to hard in this heat
, she reprimanded her self.

The teen hung her apron up and stepped outside the door of the shop into the cooler air outside.

Arik took the Wizard to a local farmer who sold a working mare for a reasonable price. However, he had to get her some new shoes if the Wizard was to get any real use out of her.

Approaching the smith's shop, Arik spied the youth taking a break. "The smith in, kid?"

Raiab followed behind Arik, observing and taking mental notes. The village was suffering from the plague - it occured to him that helping the heal the townsfolk might lead to some answers - was Trian here? Where was his home? And so on.

Ziva cocked an eyebrow, she didn't like this guy already.

"You're looking at her," she said looking the two over, the hairs on the back of her neck bristled. One of them was a mage.

"Jethro's down with the plague. What do ya need?"

Arik caught an inflection in her voice. Decided to keep it down, apparently she didn't want to be recognized as a girl.

"Shoe the Wizard's horse. We've got some business, so we should be able to leave you alone while you work."

The smith was down with the plague. Well, if he could follow his leads, he might find the source. At least here. He kept the little magic amulet in his pocket concealed for now. He didn't need to broadcast what he had to the world.

"Now, then," Raiab said. "While the girl works, we should get down to healing this plague. Where should we begin? You mentioned you know where this plague begins, so lead on."

"I can do that." She said.

She gave him the price took his money and the mare and walked the mare around back to her work area. She checked the mare for hoof injuries, travelers didn't always tend to their mounts, and then grabbed her apron and tools and got to work. She was done before they showed back up and she made herself drink some water, thinking that maybe her headache was from dehydration. It helped some so she didn't worry.

Ziva then walked back to the stable and begun brushing the mare as she waited for the two to return. The poor girl looked like she needed it.

"You read too much into words, Wizard. I didn't say I knew where it began or what began it, I said I suspected it was magical in nature," Arik said dryly as he walked around. A lot of people were gone. The symptoms of the plague were unusual, to say the least. Headache, vomiting, and spasms of intense violent behavior that usually culminated in the death of the individuals. What most people didn't realize was that the deaths became more gruesome as the plague marched on.

It was evolving.

"Can you sense any dark magic or anything?" he asked. He was actually sure if Wizard's could do that, but if anyone could just feel out whatever the taint was coming from, it ought to be a Wizard. Or a Marn Shaman. But the Marn and the humans were not on speaking relations, although most of the tribes kept to themselves.

"Hmm," Raiab said. "Let me concentrate." he flicked one hand out, searching for residual magic. Immediately he felt, like a whiff of something rotting that nearly made him gag. It was coming from the center of the village.

"This way," he said, gesturing for Arik to follow. The "smell" grew stronger as he approached, and before long he found himself in front of a small, dingy inn. "Here."

Arik reached for the door to the inn when it came down in a crash. A bloody villager with a crazed look in his eyes gargled something at them through the blood. His flesh also had an oddly pale pallor to his skin, something very disturbing to Arik.

His sword was out in a flash and through the man's abdomen. However, he did not die. He clawed at Arik wildly and began gurgling his own blood. Arik drew back and hacked the man in half.

"What... is... that?" he said, just as a mass of plagued individuals ran at them in a maddening, blood frenzied pack. Arik cursed softly.
