Sylaost's face took on an ugly cast. "I don't know who you are or what you're doing, but you are threatening all that I stand for and everything I've been trying to do. I will save this forest. I have an ally who will help me in this venture and spread the powers of the wood and drive back those who would dare encroach upon it! Leave now, lest terrible things happen to you."

He gestured once again to the killers of animals, summoning more vines to contain them.

The man gestured briskly, draining Sylaost of the will, of the strength to do magic, cutting him briefly from his own essence, forcing his mind into a corner.

"Let's not be foolish, young one. You've done far more harm to these woods than you know. You have over-saturated the soil, drowning many of the smaller, less aggressive plants you did not cause unnatural growth in. Those you did shall wither or contort, growing in unhealthy and pained shapes. The powers of this world are not wholesale open to you to alter, there are consequences for all your actions, doubly so for those for which you use this power," he stated flatly. "Children lie dead in hamlets not far beyond that inn, men had bodies hewn for nothing more than defending their homes from your beasts, who by no will of their own attacked men in a place of their strength. If there is justice in this world, young Sylaost, this is not it."

"My goal is to defend the woods," Sylaost said. "They tear it down, ripping down the trees, slaying the beasts needlessly and depriving them of their food and shelter. They are my friends and this is a war. A war that I will win."

"At what cost?" the robed one said quietly. "Will you see these woods drowned, twisted, the animals all dead in a battle they did not elect? You sacrifice all you swear to protect, and kill even innocents because they do not follow your belief? A zealot, you are, but a lunatic you need not be."

He spread his arms and visions of Sylaost hanging from a gibbet, sport for crows that were once his friends, malnourished and dirty, hair overgrown in a backdrop of of stone, no nature in sight, "There is as much justice in this as in your actions now. You harm the wood in far less visible ways no less tangible. You slay innocents as you perceive your enemies do. Be wary of your own actions, Sylaost. Your recklessness will destroy all you plan to save."

"Why have you come here?" Sylaost demanded. "What do you want from me?"

"For you to stop killing this forest and innocent people. A waste of life is regrettable, would you not agree? Especially if you wish to protect it," he sighed.

Another crack sounded and Sylaost's power returned to him. The Faerie appeared again. "Kill this fool, Sylaost. Do not let him stop our attack."

"It would be my pleasure," Sylaost said, and raised his hand. "I have heard enough from him!" he lifted one hand and thousands of insects swarmed over him, as the clouds overhead darkened and lightening lanced down from above, striking him hundreds of times. The earth rumbled as more thorny vines burst from the earth, swarming over him, wrapping around his body.

He laughed. Surrounded by the furies of nature, he laughed. "You would condemn all your friends to death? Go home, little ones, go home."

The vines and insects returned to their previous occupation, the vines even de-mutated as they returned to the Earth.

"Fae Chindae, I'd thought you'd be wiser than this. Do you not recognize me?" the Faerie's face twisted in anger.

"KILL HIM!"

The man held up a hand, "Do not bother, your attacks mean nothing to me. Perhaps you and I, Chindae, should hold contest, a true duel. Lightnings and blasting wrath are not the purest expressions of battle."

The Faerie's face darkened with wrath.

Syalost fell back, shocked and terrified. The man had survived the full fury of everything he could throw at. A new, terrifying thought entered him - whoever this was was not human, was so far behind humanity that he could not be touched by any mere physical spells. He looked at the man, eyes wide with fear.

"What...what are you?"

"A man, a man who has lived a very long time, and a man who understands the power that courses through the universe far better than you could hope to, but a man," he looked back to the Faerie.

"Shall we, Chindae?"

The two began their fight, and rather than fire and lightning, or winds or quakes, or blasts or any sort of physical implement. Yet here the power was more palpable than in any of Sylaost's spells. The two stared at each other, contesting the other, a touch here, a poke there, and then there were words.

A song, from Chindae, of snaring, of traps well laid, of forests covering the whole world in their lush greenery.

The robed man's reply, words of caution, of patience and elusiveness. Of circles and going round and round.

Chindae's reply was a song of weaving, of warm comforts of a time long gone, of wizardry and lights such as the world no longer knew.

The final bar of a the future and the past, of how history is ever looped, and how even the most careful of spiders leave a weak link.

Chindae crumpled to her knees and wept bitter tears.

"I defeated you once before, turning your guile against you. It appears you have fallen for the same trick twice, Fae."

"Curse you, Trian Defole, man who lived a hundred lives!"

Sylaost was confused as nothing seemed to be happening between the two. But at the same time, he could feel something, power prickling against his skin and he realized that something even bigger was going on around him. It felt strange, big and he suddenly realized just how truly insignificant he was. He quailed, cowering and hid behind a rock, fear surging through his mind as the concept of the forest rushed through him and he realized for the first time what his benefactor truly wanted: forests.

But not merely his forest, restored to its old pristine beauty and him in peace. No, a forest that choked the world, leaving thousands of people dead. Cities overgrown with trees and vines and bushes. Animals roaming through deserted streets.

"I never wanted this," he whispered, sinking his knees. "What have I done?"

"You don't have to have it," the man who was called Trian replied.

"You can't take him, he is my Champion! He made the deal!"

Trian's eyes widened, "You did? Well, this is a different matter altogether. I shall strike you a deal, then, Chindae."

"No, I shall not deal with you, Defole. Not again."

"Then you will have to deal with a representative of mine," he replied.

"You can't make me give him up!" she shrieked. "The Ancient Laws deny you that any more than I can deny him breath!"

"There is more than one way achieve what I wish," he replied. "Until then, stay in your forest. If you get out, I will not be so merciful."

With that, he was simply gone. Chindae hissed and rubbed her limbs as if she were cold.

For a long moment, Sylaost didn't move, simply laying there, curled up, miserable.

What have I done?

Vines grew from nowhere, entangling Lisa and Richard. Almost as soom as they were there, they were gone. Lisa peeked out the window and saw the last couple beasts in full retreat.

"What just happened," she asked, breathless.

"I don't know," he breathed heavily, taking time to examine the damage to the room, and her clothes. "I don't know. And I'm fairly sure I don't want to know."
