The criminal turned down one of the allies in Central, gun in one hand, bag stuffed full of money in the other. In the distance, he could hear police sirens. He grinned wickedly.

"Suckers."

He suddenly heard footsteps behind him. He spun around and pointed the gun as a man turned the corner. He was wearing a shirt and tie under a long black coat, his hair short and his gray eyes glittered. He wore a simple silver ring set with what appeared to be a piece of jade on his right hand.

"So this is what all the commotion was about," he said, sounding amused. "Police are looking for you, y'know."

"Stay back," the thief said, pointing his gun at the man's chest.

"Now that's not very nice," he said. He acted just as the thief fired his gun. He clenched one fist, and his ring began to glow with blue lightening, and a moment later, an enormous glittering crystal structure of pale blue rumbled from the ground, trapping the bullets inside.

"You're an Alchemist!" the thief cried.

"Very good," the man said, removing his hat and offering a short bow. "Daniel Legros, the Crystal Alchemist at your serv..." but the thief was already running the other direction.

"Idiot," Daniel muttered, mostly to himself. "Shouldn't have wasted time talking." he took off at a run after the thief.

The thief suddenly ran into a wall that rose out of the ground, flawlessly crafted with skilled Alchemy. It distinctively lacked the stretch marks that most alchemical constructions had.

"HALT, LAWBREAKER!" a loud voice declared. A fist burst through the wall and seized the thief by shirt, another large fist ripping the gun from the thief's grip. "YOU HAVE VIOLATED THE LAW! TODAY IS YOUR UNLUCKY DAY, FOR TODAY IS THE DAY YOU FACE ADAM LEWIS NEIL-ARMSTRONG! THIS LAW ENFORCING NATURE HAS BEEN PASSED DOWN THE ARMSTRONG LINE FOR GENERATIONS!" a massively muscled man then followed his arms through the wall, dust and debris flying everywhere. Onlookers swore up and down that somehow, the man was sparkling.

The large man looked over to Daniel, "THANK YOU, CIVILIAN FOR YOUR SUPPORT!"

"Uh, yeah, no problem," Daniel said, thoroughly bemused. He had heard of the Armstrongs before and their hamminess...he just hadn't realized how true it was. "But I'm just a civilian. I'm a State Alchemist!" he procured the silver pocketwatch from his jacket. "The Crystal Alchemist is my codename!"

"A state funded researcher of the science of Alchemy!" the man's eyes twinkled, and he threw his arms into the air, still holding the thief in one. The man flopped like a sack as the big man made grandiose movements. "It is an honor to meet our venerated scientists!" He tossed the thief to some officers when their patrol car arrive, then suddenly was shirtless.
"LET MY MUSCLES THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO OUR GREAT NATION!"

Daniel backed away hastily. Why the devil did he take his shirt off? he wondered.

"You're welcome," he said, now somewhat scared and wanting to get away.

The large man was then told something by one of the officers. He looked over to the State Alchemist who was backing away, "COME, FRIEND! Fuhrer Mustang wishes to CONGRATULATE and THANK you for helping contain this fiendish criminal! In person!"

And then he began his deceptively light stride back toward Central Command.

"Uh...okay," Daniel said. "It was nothing really...just a common criminal..." he trailed off staring at the Major. This was a personality to be reckoned with.

A middle aged blonde man smiled at them as they entered the office of the Fuhrer. Roy Mustang was not a tall man, and he had certainly at one point had less grey in his hair. In fact, at one point he had a color other than grey in his hair.

"Sir, this is the State Alchemist that aided in apprehending that criminal," Major Armstrong said. Next to the Fuhrer there was a woman of similar age, her hair still retaining color, if faded, but her eyes were as sharp as ever. Formerly Riza Hawkeye, for the last twenty-eight years her last name was Mustang, and was the wife of the Fuhrer. Only a Colonel, despite her husband's and the rest of Central Command's efforts to promote her, but a presence nonetheless. To his other side, there was a man of similar shape to the Major, but older, and somehow even balder, and even more amazingly, larger. Alex Louis Armstrong, the Strong Arm Alchemist and the leading General in Central Command.

"Ah, very good major. Alphonse, this is Daniel Legros, a fellow State Alchemist. I believe he might be able to aid you."

The blonde man nodded, "Thank you, Fuhrer Mustang."

"I told you, it's Roy to you. On and off duty."

Daniel's jaw dropped. "The Alphonse Elric?" he asked. Legends about the man had spread far and wide - his failed attempt at human transmutation, his brother had managed to save him by binding his soul to a suit of armor and then got him back by surrendering his ability to practice alchemy. Afterwards, Alphonse had travelled in the East, far and wide.

"Its a honor to meet you. But what's so special about this thief that the Fuhrer himself and one of the legendary Elric brothers would get involved?

Alphonse sighed, "I really hoped I wouldn't have to say this word ever again. I've told the Fuhrer, but I think everyone here deserves to know." He took another deep breath, "My brother had heard some bizarre things going on at Fort Briggs, so he went up to check out some outrageous sounding claims that to us sounded disturbingly familiar."

He looked up, "My brother and I believe that somehow, the Drachma have developed their own philosopher's stone. Maybe more. The man you apprehended was a spy for Drachma, the money he stole were actually documents regarding the events of the Promised Day thirty years ago. Regarding," he looked directly at Daniel, "Well, not many people know this. Almost all of them still anywhere near Amestris are in this room," he looked over to a map, and then with a pen began to draw.

"Our country is one giant transmutation circle."

"What?" Daniel asked, incredulous. "That's...hard to believe, to be honest. How did that happen? The Promised Day...wasn't that the day of the coup?"

"Yes it was," Adam Armstrong noted. "And you all were the ILLUSTRIOUS HEROES who saved our great nation from NEFARIOUS PLOTTERS IN CENTRAL!"

Alex Armstrong cleared his throat, "Actually, nephew, it is more complicated than that."

The senior staff briefed them on the homoculus, the philosopher's stones, the true purpose of the giant transmutation circle.

"Then you MUST STOP THIS PLOY, O HONORED ONES! SUCH COURAGE! SUCH VALIANT EFFORT!"

The senior Armstrong shook his head again, "We aren't as young as we used to be, Adam. Not by a long shot. None of us are in any sort of condition to live through a situation like that again. We're entrusting it to you and Alphonse for now, but we're assigning you a military aide in your efforts to deduce what is going on for the moment."

Alphonse nodded, "Yes, my nephew. Colonel Elric."

Adam's eyebrows arched, "Pardon me, sir, but isn't Captain Elric a frivolous slacker of an officer only looking for his next promotion?"

Then Riza Mustang spoke for the first time since the two had entered the room, "That's exactly why he was chosen for this task. You had always best keep your eye on the most harmless looking ones." The Fuhrer barely cracked a smile. Then he looked at the Major.

"You have a different, but similar, assignment Major Armstrong. You are to assess the security of Fort Briggs while Alphonse and his unit do some undercover scouting."

"So...what is it that I'm here for?" Daniel said, more bewildered than ever. "I'm flattered by your confidence in me, but what am I needed for?"

"I have heard several positive reports of your work," Mustang said matter-of-factly. "Alphonse is going to need assistance, and, as you know, Fullmetal has been incapable of Alchemy since the Promised Day. You are the most appropriate candidate for this."

Daniel turned faintly pink. He'd only been at his job a month and already the Fuhrer had heard of him?

"I'd be honored to do whatever I can."
