Elizabeth looked at Daniel closer for the first time since entering the room. She saw the chain of the pocket watch that marked him as a state alchemist and thought for a moment. He must be the new one...The Crystal Alchemist.

She grinned at the argument. Ed was still the best, gate or no.

"At this rate he'll never be forgiven for anything. I swear, he wants us both to quit. Now mind telling me what's going on?"

"All the Major told me is that we're to report to Fort Briggs," he said in a nonchalant tone. The man was short, but not miniscule, and very, very blonde. He carried himself with a kind of arrogant confidence that probably made him unpopular with his superiors.

"We leave tomorrow, etc. The Alchemist might know more."

"Well Crystal," she asked, using his state nickname, "what do you know about our excursion to general Armstrong's frozen hell?"

"Drachma's evidently acting up," Daniel said. "We caught a spy in Central, so we're going on a fact-finding mission." He hesitated about telling her everything else - the Promised Day, the nationwide transmutation circle, the homunculi...it was clearly supposed to be kept secret.

And well...loose lips sank ships. He wondered how much she knew.

"hmm..." elizabeth thought for a moment, "they're up to something again."

The "they" she was referring to was her parents.

"Maybe they're doing their jobs," the Captain offered as he turned to his team and began to brief them on their new posting.

"You all know her reputation. She's older than the Fuhrer, but still serves in the field in the most inhospitable region in the country. She will work us all like dogs until our orders move us elsewhere. Prepare to face things the Briggs way, men!"

Elizabeth sighed and pulled her hood tighter over her ears. She was glad that she didn't etch her transmutation circles on arm braces like some alchemists, that was asking to freeze. At least she knew what to expect and how to dress this time. She looked out over the frozen tundra as they bounced along in a truck bed headed towards the north wall of Briggs.

The trip was uneventful. Grim mood, even. The Major and the Alchemists had their own transportation, and a separate set of orders. The rest of them, however, were at the mercy of Briggs.

The captain had been there, once. He really had wished he had not been there, and he really wished he was not returning.

Daniel sat in the car, wrapped in his coat, arms folded across his chest and wishing that he was someplace warmer. Nonetheless, he refused to complain. He didn't like looking weak and he certainly didn't like people taking pity on him.

Let's just get this over with, he thought.

"Well this brings back memories, huh pipsqueak?" Elizabeth teased.

Their last trip here together had not ended well. Adding insult to injury, the Furher made sure she was assigned to Briggs when she'd joined up against his wishes.

She did not like the cold. She preferred the warm arid environment of the Ishval region.

The captained waved her off and glared outside at the snow. They were coming close to it. They stopped only briefly at North City, and from there continued. He was not feeling enthusiastic.

"We will need to find my brother once we arrive," Alphonse said to Daniel. "We will need to work from his findings and notes. I am worried."

"understandable considering our discussion," Daniel said. "But surely whoever is behind this couldn't be more dangerous than this foe you told me about before..." he wasn't sure how much he should mention. Best to error on the side of caution.

"It doesn't take Alchemy to kill someone. It doesn't take what we faced to kill someone. And we're bereft a few things from then," Alphonse noted. "Mustang and Riza are much older, so am I for that matter. And Edward isn't the Fullmetal Alchemist anymore."

"Nevertheless, we really, really need to avert a war. Mustang has done so much to build up the nation, he actually has next to no power in the office of Fuhrer anymore. A destabilizing war is the last thing our new democracy needs. It's the last thing anything needs. I wonder if our messages to the Emperor of Xing have got through."

Elizabeth sighed she hated Briggs. She hadn't been planning on ever going back there.

She found herself wondering what was going on. The alchemists were being kept separate and wouldn't talk anyway. They were under orders. She'd been placed with the soldiers. She had assumed they were protecting the alchemist, but from what?

"so what exactly are we doing here, Captain Pipsqueak?" she asked, tiring of the guessing games.

"Officially we're the military attachment to the State Alchemists. Unofficially we're to assess the situation with Drachma. What this amounts to is us butt-kissing her icy majesty's steel keister until we can go back to Central. Honestly, I hate you. This assignment is somehow your fault, I am sure of it. Let's hope Armstrong talked his aunt into a placid mood, at least. I hear old age has done the opposite of mellow her," he sighed.

"But I am an Elric, in the face of horrid opposition and frightening blonde women, we persevere! Not that she's blond anymore, really, but that's beside the point! Men, prepare to be emotionally scarred!"
