As the two walked, they saw a number of other people, all tall Men with grim faces and great bows of yew. The Bowman's Guild of Esgaroth had put up their best archers for this festival, not wanting to concede the Fifth Black Arrow Day tournament to the King's Men. And the King's Men, all clad in black from head to foot, the personal guard of King Bard, were similarly grim-faced in their determination, also with their massive longbows. The competition looked sharp.

Avina really did not have an answer to that. She looked puzzled for a moment.

As they began to walk she asked, "Well the tournament starts soon...got any advice for me?"

"Focus on the target, block out distractions and aim true," Caranthir replied. "And don't be intimidated. Even though these Men are all extremely gifted archers and are led by one who slew a dragon."

She took a deep breath.

"I'll do my best. You should too, you really are good you know."

"Why wouldn't I do my best?" Caranthir asked, arching an eyebrow.

"Well...I just...You don't seem very excited...and its hard to good at something when you don't want to..."

"I assure you that just because I find this whole situation inane doesn't mean I won't try to win," Caranthir said stiffly.

"Inane?"

The speaker behind them was dressed similarly to the King's Men, black from top to bottom, but had an air of authority about him that the others lacked.

"If you find the practice of archery inane, Elf, perhaps you should return to the fastness of your Elvenking's halls. The Desolation of the Dragon is not healed yet, and danger still lurks outside, out of sight."

Caranthir turned to face the speaker. "You misunderstand me, my good Man. I do not find the practice of archery in and of itself inane - indeed, it is of great use in the forest and I am a proficient archer. I meant that I find this competition itself inane and serving of no greater purpose. Indeed, I was not interested in participating in this contest at all, but was persuaded to by this girl."

Avina was silent as she turned to face the man. She was about to say something when Caranthir spoke up. She paused. She hadn't realized that he really didn't want to participate. She just thought that he wasn't very confident.

"If you find competition inane, then my answer still stands," the man said grimly. "It was not through 'good enough' that Smaug was felled, nor was it contentment that saw us through the Battle of Five Armies. This tournament serves to find those whose skill exceeds the expected, and it gives these men a benchmark to measure themselves against. There is always need of exceptional skill in the Wilderland. At least, there is among the Men who live in it."

The speaker than turned and walked into the crowd of similarly dressed folk, talking to them of matters too quiet to be overheard.

Caranthir merely shook his head and checked his arrows and bow once more, making certain all was in readiness.

"Are you prepared?" he asked Avina.

Avina did the same.

"Ready as I'll ever be. Good luck."

Caranthir took his place among the archers, still checking his equipment.

An announcer took a podium on a stage to the side and announced in a high, clear voice. "Each contestant is allowed two arrows for the duration of the competition. Archers, please select your arrows now."

As this was being done, a man set a wreath on a wide wooden board a goodly distance away from the amassed contestants.

"This is the Wreath Shot! The goal is to hit or hit within the wreath! With that, let the Day of the Black Arrow competition begin!"
