Excited was an understatement, she was doing exceeding well for a beginner. She felt sorry for caranthir, but she was determined to good enough for the both of them. After all, if she was doing this good, he must be a good teacher. She took a deep breath and prepared for the next round.

A large wooden board shaped and painted to look like a dragon was set up with a wooden ring nailed to it's left breast.

The previous year's champion fired his two arrows in rapid succession, hitting the ring twice. This year's Royal archer then did the same. And then, to the crowd's amazement, so did Avina.

Three rounds went by, and the Beorning girl hung in there. The Royal Archer faltered and lost his first arrow. But then the Champion became overly confident and his. At the end, she struck both arrows true, while the Royal Archer managed to only to hit the dragon-board at all, while the former Champion fired a horrid misfire into the waters of Long Lake.

Avina was the winner.

Caranthir watched as Avina won round after round, finally earning her way into the finals and then the victory afterwards. He wondered idly what the reactions would be to that - a foreigner from distant lands defeating the best the Men of Lake-Town had to offer in archery.

Nonethless, he didn't stir from his position, watching the award ceremonies from the depths of the crowd.

Avina leapt with excitement as she nailed her final shot. She looked around quickly, scanning the crowd for Caranthir. She didn't see him. She sighed, she would have to find him later.

she couldn't have done it with out him, he needed to celebrate too.

There was a stunned silence for a while, with all eyes on Avina. Then the black-clad man who had spoken to Caranthir earlier stood up.

"Men of Lake-Town, Men of Dale, is this how you applaud your champion? This girl has proven the best archer of the festival," his voice was hard, condemning the people for their silent gawking. Someone then began a clap, and soon a chorus of applause began. A sort of amazement and awe enveloped the audience as the grim man strode forward and presented the girl with an arrow, entirely painted black.

Caranthir recognized the newcomer instantly. Bard, King of Dale and Lake-Town, Slayer of the Golden Dragon. He wandered idly if his father had met with him as of late.

Avina thanked him for the arrow, her prize for winning. Her eyes scanned the crowd for Caranthir. She smiled at the applause, it felt good to hear everyone cheering for her, even if it had taken this man yelling at them for it to happen.

Avina quickly excused herself, spotting Caranthir. She slipped through the crowd, not an easy task with all eyes on her, for winning the tourney. She gave him a big bear hug.

"Thanks for your help, Caranthir. I couldn't have done it without you to teach me!"

The man who presented Avina with the arrow then took the podium. The assembled crowd bowed their heads. The Lake-Men then shouted, "Hail, Bard the Bowman!"

The Dale-Men then shouted, "Hail, Bard the King!"

Entire crowd then resounded, "Hail, Bard, Slayer of the Dragon!"

Bard raised a hand, "Let the Bearer of the Black Arrow step forward!"

Caranthir stared at the girl after she released him. She had...bear-hugged him. He felt enormously uncomfortable and wanted nothing more to do with the Lake-Men and their festival.

Avina went silent as the man took the podium.

That was bard...the man who slayed the dragon smaug? Wow.

She stepped forward when he called on her, reluctantly moving away from Caranthir. He was the only person in this town she actually knew.

Bard looked at her and the faintest touches of a smile reached his lips, "Name yourself, Champion."

"I am Avina the Bold of Beorn's Folk."

She answered, with as much confidence as she could muster.

"Hail, Avina of the Beornings, Bearer of the Black Arrow!" Bard cried out. The assembled people echoed Bard's declaration.

Avina stood and listened to the cheers. She sighed internally, would they react the same if they knew she'd only been shooting for a week? Shed been extremely lucky to do so well in the tournament.
