"Well, that was another thing," he said between breaths.

Crazy girl. Going to get me killed. I know it.

"Really should try to make friends who aren't shimmery ghosty things, you know?"

Riza started, as she snapped out of it. She didn't trust the human.

"Why do you care?" She half-snapped.

It wasn't that she was ungrateful, but he was getting on her nerves.

"Well, I generally think people who are about to die - or worse - tend to appreciate it when someone keeps them from dying and such. Of course, I could be mistaken, and then I recommend you take it up with the gods or some medical professional, or maybe a wizard or something, as people of sound mind tend to want to avoid dying pointlessly in a forest in a thunderstorm."

And now would be a good time for a dramatic peal of thunder, eh? No? You gods are an unhelpful lot, you know that? I do you all a favor and I get nothing out of it.

At that precise moment, a jagged flash of lightening blazed around the sky followed by a roar of thunder. The bolt landed several miles away in the middle of the forest, and then all was silent, save for the pattering of the rain.

"Yeah...well...I can't figure out why you care about a...a..half-breed like me."

She said, defensively. She couldn't afford to trust him.

"Half-breed, whole-breed, I care more if my bread is whole wheat."

He shrugged and looked at the sky.

Smart ass.

"Anyway, can we get out of the rain? The winter wind and the icy water are cold, and I'm bald."

"Says Ms. Big Cloak and hair. My ears are freezing," he said.

He held his flask out to her, "Want a drink?"

She jerked away from the flask.

"You can either drink that, or use it for fuel to dry off."

"You have something against distilled beverages? Geez, uptight for girl with no memory." He took another mouthful.

"Anyway, I'm getting tired, so you can have first watch tonight."

"I meant, since we don't have much firewood, you could use it to fuel a fire for awhile, to keep warm. you were the one complaining it was cold."

He gave her a grin, "Drinking it warms you up too."

Then he unrolled his bedroll and winter blanket. "Oh, the joys of traveling. Hard cave floor, here I come!"

She rolled her eyes, and curled up by the mouth of the cave to munch on some rations and try to stay awake.

When it came to it, though, his sleep was fitful. Things were not sitting well with him, especially with this 'servant of a higher power' business. These things never end well.

He weighed his options, and came to the conclusion that the next time he was visited by a celestial, he would ask them to please respect his right to act on information he obtains in the natural course of his life to preserve the integrity of his free will, and to bother clerics and Paladins for sacred hero business.

The night passed slowly, the storm eventually letting up at a little past midnight, leaving behind gray skies, mud and puddles of water.
