"You have lived a truly deprived life if you have not heard The Legend of Connacht told to you as a small girl. I had been under the idea that the Westlands still remembers that a millennium ago humanity was on the verge of extinction, much like it is now." He sighed.

"And out of the east, they say, in the lands beyond Gower, past the furthest boundaries of the Cath Bruig at its peak, a hero arose. His name was Connacht, and he marshaled the forces of Light and defeated Moagim The Leveler and his flesh eating armies of Myrkridia, he defeated The Watcher and imprisoned him, he buried the Trow in their own pride, and he drove the Faceless Man into hiding. A very brief summary of his feats," he said. "Historical, too. There are... were many murals and ancient tomes in Muirthemne, some by Connacht's own hand, detailing these events. It is a shame you never heard this told by a true storyteller. Children always loved the plays and stories given at the Grand Bazaar during harvest..." he remembered those places, those faces. They were gone now. Long since buried in the desert sands.

"Sadly, this time we have no Connacht to come and save us," he said grimly.

"Perhaps someday when this is all over I can hear the true story," she said,"I'm Eleena."

Now she took his still outstretched hand.

She ignored the last comment, without hope the war was already lost.

He sensed her response, or lack thereof, to his last statement. He looked at her quizzically, "Perhaps, perhaps hope is worth something. You are young, after all."

He decided to not tell her how old he was, since she did not know any stories about the Cath Bruig. He himself did not know the exact age, actually.

"Eleena," he said. "It is an honor to fight with you."

After a pause, he asked her another question, "Do you know who Rabican is?"

She nodded, "him I have heard of, at least a little bit."

"It is he who leads the defense of Madrigal. The others of the Nine are supposedly in Council. I have heard rumor that Alric had led an expedition somewhere in the east, and brought something back of great significance. I don't know how true that is..." he clenched his fist.

"I do know, however, that Shiver is leading the assault on Madrigal. I do not know what Rabican plans to do about that."

"That's a name I've heard before too...Let us hope that Rabican has a plan."

In the silence that followed, she could not keep her mind from wandering. And wander it did, back to memories of her father.

He flexed his shoulders and drew a deep breath. He was not used to speaking so much. But he had made an effort to at least let this one know what she was a part of. Soon their small group topped a particularly high river and he saw the Scamander river weave its way through the land. They were past the village of Crow's Bridge, and the Vanguard of the Legion was somewhere near Otter Ferry. They could stop there and possibly reunite with the main body of the Legion there.

They needed to, in any event.

"Were meeting up with the resto fo the Legion, aren't we?" She asked, musing, "I wonder if my father or my brother are there."

"You have family in the army?" he said softly. "Perhaps they are there."

There was actually a good chance they were somewhere in this region. With Shiver moving so rapidly toward Madrigal, the Nine were reluctant to make any actions abroad. They wanted the bulk of their forces here, to stop the Fallen Lords from advancing any further north.

He mused silently on this. The most significant military action that he was certain occurred in the last few years was a failed attempt to retake Tyr. Only a fragment of the the Twelfth Legion returned, the Nine enraged that the commander had dared assault the city without their permission. Ten Motion had been there.

"Do you know where your father or brother went when they joined?" he asked. Perhaps he had met one of them there. He had saved a few lives in that disaster.

"My father said he was heading towards Tyr," she said,"that was the last I heard from him...".

Ten Motion shook his head, "It is likely that he is dead then, I am sorry. If he is not, then he might be somewhere in the vanguard. The Twelfth Legion's remnants were integrated into the Tenth."

A few of the conscripts moved toward the river, a few hundred yards away. Ten Motion followed, eying the deeper water suspiciously. "Don't get too far from the rest of us," he called after them sternly.

"His name was Ajax," she said,"....he always said it was better to go out fighting for what you believe..."

She was talking more to herself now than to Ten Motion.

"Ajax?" he muttered, trying to recall the name. Did he get the name? There had been at least fifteen thousand casualties at Tyr, where did he start to try to remember?

He did remember a man muttering about a daughter and wife, but that could've been anyone. He healed him, and he said his name was... Ajax. Was it the same man, though?

"I think he's alive," he said to her. It wasn't a promise, but it was true enough.

They were getting very close the river now.
